City of Wolverhampton College is in the top three colleges in the country* – and number one in the West Midlands – for student achievement rates and was graded ‘good’ by Ofsted in January 2023.
Formed in September 1999 from the merger of Wulfrun College and Bilston Community College, it adopted its current name after Wolverhampton gained city status in December 2000.
The college offers a diverse range of courses for school leavers and adult learners, with qualifications from entry level to university-level HNCs and HNDs, and foundation degrees in partnership with The University of Wolverhampton.
It also provides a comprehensive apprenticeship programme – working with key employers such as Bentley, Budweiser, and Morgan Sindall – ‘preparation for work’ schemes to enhance employability skills, and an expanding ‘into employment’ programme to help individuals upskill and retrain in local priority sectors.
The college has two main campuses in the city – Paget Road, in Compton, and Wellington Road, in Bilston. The campuses are equipped with industry-standard facilities including an extended construction centre with dedicated trade workshops, outdoor groundworks training site, professional bakery kitchen, hairdressing and barbering training salons, well-equipped sports centre, health and social care simulated spaces, digital areas, science labs, broadcast suite, music and photography studios and performing arts spaces, with an area for cabin crew training coming soon.
In addition, the college provides learning facilities and a sixth form centre for A level students, a secure autism base, and specialist programmes for students with special educational needs and disabilities.
The college also has a number of specialised training centres such as the Electric Vehicle and Green Technologies Training Centre in Wednesfield, the Polymer Training and Innovation Centre in Telford, and the Transport, Rail and Infrastructure Academy with locations at the Wellington Road campus and sites in Aston, Dudley, and Coventry, and a Drink Dispense Academy at the Wellington Road campus.
Currently, the college is undergoing a significant campus transformation project as part of the City of Wolverhampton Council’s City Learning Quarter masterplan. This includes the opening of the £8.1 million Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre (ATAC) – purpose-built for engineering and automotive studies – in September 2024, and the upcoming four-storey state-of-the-art campus set to open in Wolverhampton city centre in autumn 2025.
