Queen Alexandra College (QAC) is a national specialist college dedicated to empowering young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. The college helps them achieve their ambitions and live fulfilling, independent lives. The QA Charity, Birmingham offers a broad range of services, including a specialist FE College, community services, residential services and Enterprises. As a specialist further education (FE) college, it is publicly funded by central government and by approximately 30 different Local Authorities. Additional funding to support students and clients comes from social services, health services, fundraising and enterprise income.
With a rich history dating back to 1846 and independent charity status since 1997, QAC has evolved into a dynamic and inclusive learning community that is committed to high-quality education, care, and personal development. Over recent years, student and client numbers have grown significantly. Today, QAC operates a main campus in Harborne, as well as two specialised campuses: Umberslade campus in Selly Oak (community Services) and Pinewood campus in Bartley Green.
Offering a wide range of specialist programmes, QAC provides tailored pathways that include academic study, vocational qualifications, and life skills development. With small class sizes and high levels of individual support, students are encouraged to progress at their own pace. Curriculum Pathways are Preparation for Life, Supported Internships, LEAP, Vocational and Access2Pathways which are designed to maximise independence, confidence, and future employability.
QAC supports a diverse range of students, including those with visual impairments, autism, physical disabilities, and learning difficulties. A multidisciplinary team consists of Speech and Language Therapists, Counsellors, Mentoring, Psychology services, physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Rehab & Travel Trainers and a specialist VI team—this team offer a parallel curriculum ensuring holistic education is maximised. The College also offers a wide variety of enrichment activities and work-based opportunities extending learning beyond the classroom.
QAC is also home to a Fitness Centre and outdoor gym, designed to meet the needs of a diverse user base. We offer an extensive range of exercise equipment in a friendly, relaxed environment, serving as a hub for physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Specialist assessment areas and therapy services support students’ physical health and overall wellbeing, contributing to their personal development beyond more traditional education routes.
